Boiler service

Energy Efficiency Week 2021 / Monday

Level 1: Get your boiler serviced before winter sets in

One of the best ways to be certain that your boiler is in good shape, running and performing as well as it should is to have an annual service. This plays a significant role in reducing your carbon footprint, which in turn has a positive impact on your energy bills by lowering your monthly usage.

Will you be getting your boiler service booked?

A regular boiler service will clean up any deposits that have built up in the boiler. Simple things such as ensuring the internal combustion area is clean and free of any debris will improve the heat transfer, allow the boiler to light more easily and burn efficiently.

Typically, an annual service should cost no more than €100. Any parts or consumables required will be charged above that. You will receive a full inspection, safety check and testing, as well as a clean of all the relevant components.

The engineer will also identify any issues that may require repairing meaning you could avoid a nasty boiler breakdown. As well as saving money on your bills, many boiler manufacturers require an annual service to maintain the warranty.

Even if you have a routine annual boiler service scheduled, you should get your boiler serviced as soon as possible if you notice any of the following:

  • A pilot light that has a dancing yellow flame instead of a crisp blue one
  • Black marks/stains around the boiler
  • Condensation in the room where the boiler is located

You should also get your boiler (and any other gas appliances) inspected and serviced immediately if you notice any of the following signs that may indicate carbon monoxide poisoning:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Tiredness and confusion
  • Stomach pain
  • Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing

Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. You should always have a working carbon monoxide monitor.

Always use a qualified (Gas Safe if it’s a gas boiler) service engineer.
