The BIG Switch Off Competition

Welcome to the BIG Switch Off

The BIG Switch Off is a building-wide energy saving competition that challenges all staff to make small daily changes that add up to a big impact.

By simply switching off lights, equipment and appliances when they’re not needed, we can significantly reduce energy waste and cut carbon emissions, all while making our workplace more sustainable.

Over the coming weeks, teams across participating central government buildings will be taking part in this campaign. This year’s results will be celebrated at the OPW Energy Awards 2026.

Why is your building taking part?

Every year, a significant amount of energy is wasted in our buildings through items being left on when no one is using them. The BIG Switch Off is an opportunity to:

  • Reduce our energy use and carbon footprint
  • Support Ireland’s climate targets
  • Build lasting, positive habits at work
  • Work together toward a shared goal

It’s a simple idea with a powerful result: If everyone switches off, everyone makes a difference.

How the competition works

Participating buildings will compete to achieve the greatest reduction in energy use over the campaign periods. This year the focus in on the Christmas and New Year holiday shutdown and an additional opportunity to save energy over the St Briget’s Day Bank holiday weekend.

Energy consumption will be monitored and compared, along with engagement and innovation in encouraging positive behaviours.

Each building has a local Energy Team who will help to coordinate activities and share updates throughout the campaign.

What can I do?

You don’t need to be an energy expert to take part, just keep an eye out for opportunities to switch off!

Here are some simple actions you can take every day:

  • Switch off lights when you leave a room
  • Power down computers
  • Turn off monitors, personal printers and other equipment
  • Avoid leaving devices on standby
  • Unplug chargers when not in use
  • Use natural light where possible

Look out for posters, reminders, mini-challenges and activities that will be popping up around your building to help keep the momentum going.

Extra ways to get involved

Your local Energy Team may organise:

  • Awareness events
  • Switch-Off challenges between floors or teams
  • Spot-prizes and giveaways
  • Quizzes and fun facts about energy use
  • Progress reports and celebrations
  • Activity tracking charts

These smaller actions help boost engagement and can also earn your building extra points in the competition.

The benefits

Aside from the environmental benefits, there is recognition to be won! High-performing buildings will be showcased at the OPW Energy Awards in 2026 — highlighting the people and places making real, positive change.

More importantly, your actions will help create a more sustainable workplace for everyone, now and in the future.
